ABOUT THE SHOW

We are proud to present the work of artist Ruth Lieberherr at the Portal Art Gallery. The exhibit is aptly named “Dreamscapes,” and captures her fanciful, stream of consciousness imagery. Her selection of her vibrant acrylic paintings engages viewers and invites them to explore their own imaginations.

Please read her Artist Statement below, and plan to join us between 3 and 5pm on the afternoon of Saturday, May 12th, 2018. The show runs until August 22.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Remembered landscapes, people, feelings, find a new, dream-like reality in my work. I start either with developing images out of color on canvas, without a premeditated concept, or doodling on paper and transforming the doodles into grisaille (gray scale) underpaintings. Adding many washes of transparent paint, images emerge from a deeper level of consciousness, evolving into archetypes. From the fluid feeling of paint on canvas or on paper, I go where the inspiration of the colors leads me. Influenced by the ideas of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, I explore the character and expressions of the different colors. The artwork grows out of the act of painting in a metamorphosis of form and color through its various layers. Most often I don’t  like to keep the images abstract, but human figures, animals, images from nature start to emerge. My life experiences and preferences sneak into my paintings along with the archetypal images. Whimsical figures, faces, real and fantasy creatures inhabit my artwork. From growing up in Switzerland to dancing with my liturgical dance group “Skyloom”, from reading fairy tales to walking among elephants in Ghana, from the mundane to the exotic and spiritual, my experiences find new expression in my “Dreamscape” paintings. They invite the viewers to explore and expand their own imagination.

I have also  illustrated  several picture books: Winter, Awake!, written by Linda Kroll, Journey to Inner Space, written by Deborah Cohen, The Knottles, written by Nancy Mellon, Hafez, The Mathematical Stonecutter, written by Michael Punzak, and just last year: By Some Great Spell, written by Mary Beth Melton.

Art Exhibit with Karen McCarthy (2/17 till 5/6/18)

Art Exhibit with Karen McCarthy (2/17 till 5/6/18)

ABOUT THE SHOW
We are proud to present the work of artist Karen L. McCarthy in the Portal Art Gallery. She has made available a selection of her superb and labor- intensive mixed media collage constructions, each of which is printed and composed to create unique visual and emotional responses. Included in this show are several of the artist’s most recent works which are taking McCarthy in new directions. Please read her Artist Statement below, and plan to join us between 3 and 5pm on the afternoon of Saturday, February 17th, 2018. The show runs until April 4th.

ARTIST STATEMENT
As a collage and fiber artist I revel in taking similar or disparate parts and melding them into something new, encountering how individual elements are transformed when combined with others. I explore the subtleties and complexities of color, light, and movement with constant fascination.

I frequently juxtapose ordered, compartmentalized images with those which are indistinct, amorphous, and obscured. Sometimes the elements have obvious connections, sometimes more surprising ones. With a subtle use of detailing, I often employ layering to create an interplay between what is revealed and what is concealed.

There are often references to the landscape and other natural forms in my work, while inspiration derives from a range of influences. From the engaging details of Italian Renaissance masters’ panel paintings, to otherworldly rock formations I have encountered in the American Southwest, to the abiding dualities of nature and cityscape that I observe on daily walks, I draw from a pool of varied sources.

Very recent pieces reference window-like forms in a contemplative manner, exploring dreamlike experiences, the notion of inside/outside, and the all too often unsung beauty of a quiet gesture.

I fabricate my own collage materials, implementing painting and printmaking methods (paste paper printing, gelatin plate printing, stenciling, etc.) which allow for a gradual and incremental buildup of imagery. I choose techniques which can result in a wide range of textural effects and moods with varying degrees of transparency and depth. In the final stage I machine stitch the constructions, utilizing the stitched line as a design element while celebrating my passion for textiles.

I hope to create some sense of reprieve from the bombardment of images which confront us from day to day…it is an attempt to find an antidote…a breathing space…and a personal respite from some of the chaos and hectic pace of life we collectively experience.

Karen L. McCarthy

ABOUT THE GALLERY
Newly opened in Arlington Center, the Portal Crystal Gallery devotes an entire room to showcasing outstanding paintings and photography, with new Artists exhibiting monthly. From 12/2/17 through 2/8/18, we feature the artist Anne Black.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Regarding her show Spirit Songs, Conversations, Journeys, Meditations, Anne Black writes:

My art spirit emerged early in my life as the core of my being, though I didn’t consciously recognize it as such until much more recently. My life journeys and art journeys have been inextricably linked – art has been my constant companion and refuge, the one place that I felt safe at times, and a place that I kept close to my heart. In bringing together the artwork for Spirit Songs, I was finally able to see the organic connections I feel intuitively between the seemingly disparate kinds of work I create in a variety of media – conversations, journeys, and meditations. Several new pieces in Spirit Songs emerged as I was putting together the show, a celebration of the joy of my art spirit.

“A poignant coda to this show is the recent, sudden passing of my youngest brother on Sunday, November 19. I will perform “Solioquy VI” for solo viola, written for me by composer David Owens, at the December 2 opening as a tribute to my brother, and I am dedicating this show to his memory with hopes that his spirit is now in a place of peace.”
